Many Albanian families in Italy face an inheritance with assets in both countries: a house in Albania, accounts or property in Italy. The first question isn’t "who gets what", but "which law applies", because inheritance rules differ between the two countries.
In the European Union, the regulation on international successions allows, in many cases, the law of the country where the deceased was last resident, or the law of their nationality, to apply. We explain which rule fits your case, so you know from the start where you stand.
Certificates of heirship and property deeds
To deal with a property in Albania you need a certificate of heirship valid there, while assets in Italy may require a separate procedure. Documents from one country often need translating and legalising with an apostille to count in the other.
