What the Green Card is
Compulsory car insurance is valid inside the country where it was issued, but when you cross the border with your car from Albania to Italy (or the other way) you need proof that the insurance covers you abroad too: this is the Green Card, an international certificate of insurance.
Without it, you may be stopped at the border or asked to buy frontier insurance on the spot, often more expensive. With it, you drive at ease because third-party liability is covered in the countries listed on the certificate.
When you need it and what to check
You need it whenever you travel with your own car between Albania and Italy or through other countries. Before leaving, check that the Green Card is valid for the whole trip and that the countries you’ll cross are included.
